Tanja de Man - Chairman and Founder of the Saartje Foundation
In 2003 I first encountered dwarfism and like most people I had never heard
of the deviation. As owner of Saarloos Wolfhound dwarf Saartje: Daoina Sara de Louba Tar was her official
name ( Daoina Xirtaki Xymphoni Sidhe x Be Zen Bran Che Chakka Lou) I went
looking for information about how I could give her the best quality of life for
as long as it would be possible. That turned out to be quite difficult, because
there was hardly any information, and even less information that was
sufficiently substantiated to be of any use. Like many others I also spent a
fortune on holistic treatments, acupuncture, homeopathic remedies and dietary
supplements. Also a lot on investigations at regular veterinarians, just trying
everything I could think of to help her.
After Saartje had died I decided to continue sharing my knowledge and experience with other dwarf owners that were looking for information and advice on the available treatments that might also help them. When I was approached in 2009 by a German Shepherd breeder who turned out to have 2 dwarves in the litter it was then that I decided to start the Saartje Foundation.
